Word!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
The Word. I have been sitting within the Word for more often then usual thanks to this blog. I am enjoying it. Just sitting in the Word.
John takes the words of Genesis and replays them in the New Testament. “IN the beginning…” giving one the feeling that something new has come, and yet, this “new” thing is what has ever been. The Word to me is God’s self communication through Jesus. Revelation. Jesus was with God in the beginning, he was always there, he was always God. So what are we to make of it if Jesus is human and facing the same kinds of emotions that you and I have? Could it be that just as Jesus was the revelation of God to us, so we reveal God’s love to others through our words or actions?
I don’t presume to know the answers to that, but I do believe that if we live in the Word for a couple of minutes a day, it is easier to show God’s love to others.
So today, as we mark a two week countdown to Easter, let us make a point of opening up our Bibiles and living in the Word, because the word is God’s self communication, and what God has to say to you is different what God has to say to me. So go and listen.
Annette, I led a retreat for 33 high school sophomores Sunday. One of the things I tried to do was to make the Word come alive- to make Jesus come alive by retelling the stories and helping the teens connect to a Jesus with whom they can be in a real relationship.Their knowledge of the Word is so sparse. It breaks my heart to see them at Mass, for most of them seemed to have little idea what they were doing. Let’s keep praying that the Word becomes embedded in the hearts of all of us.
Sometimes I think there is a time that we all go through in life that is just about “going through the motions.” I am not suggesting that there is anything wrong with that because the rituals can be what ultimately brings you around to thinking “why do I do this?” and pursuing the reasons. Time and place and God is in all of it, right?
