There’s More!
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied” Matthew 5:5-6
But wait! There’s more! Jesus promised more! I couldn’t walk away, because there is a sermon going on.
Blessed are the meek…who are the meek? Are the meek the ones who are walked over all their lives? Or the ones who decide to walk away from confrontation? Are the meek the ones who we should be looking out for? Why? They are the ones who will inherit the land. Can you just IMAGINE what those words meant to a people who had virtually nothing. Taxed beyond reason (like us New Yorkers?). Made to feel as though they counted for nothing in the grand scheme of things. The powerless, who were only trying to get from day to day….suddenly there is this man who comes and says he is the son of God and turns the tables on the rich and powerful!! Can you just see the reactions? Disbelief, wonder…awe? WE can inherit the land?? WHO IS this guy anyway.
But wait there’s more…he seems to know we want more. We hunger and thirst for righteousness. We want to be good, we want to be surrounded by good. We mean well. Jesus sees into the heart of the people. Just as he sees their wrongdoings he sees their goodness and knows that it is real and it is a yearning. He senses that these are a people who long for their God. A people who hunger and thirst, it sounds downright desperate. But we are. We are a desperate people. Remember these people have been hungry and thirsty before. But what does Jesus assure us? We will be satisfied.
We will be satisfied.
Help me Lord to hear what you are saying to me as we progress through the beatitudes. Help me to hear your voice in my heart and to find the assurance and comfort you provide. Help me recognize the meek around me, and to understand that I am not the only one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness.
Love your reflection!!
