Moral Documents
This is one of my favorite quotes from Stephen Colbert because it exposes the hypocrisy of the way we think as a self proclaimed “Christian” nation. I am also linking the clip from his show the other night with Fr. Tom Reese from Georgetown University that talks about the budget being a moral document. In this particular case it is Paul Ryan, a Catholic, who presented a budget with very little “option for the poor” and continued benefits for the wealthy. I am not always comfortable speaking in political terms but when one professes adamantly that they follow Jesus, one needs to demonstrate that in the way that they live or the statement is just words. All of us could improve in loving our neighbor (and in the clip Stephen Colbert says “the rich are my neighbors too, shouldn’t I love them?” Yes, we should). We cannot blame every problem we have on the wealthy in this country. Many are trying to make it a better place. The point is, we need to look in our own proverbial backyard. Where could we improve?http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/413499/may-01-2012/paul-ryan-s-budget—thomas-reeseWatch the video and see what you think. I do think that the Georgetown joke was a good one! 🙂
