Foundations
My father in law is known for his determination to have whatever he builds last a millennium. Nothing is done in a less than permanent (and often costly) way. Mostly, this is a good thing, but not always. My husband, (his son), has taken this lesson to heart. “Build it to last but also to be able to change if you want/need it to.” And remember, its is all about your foundation.
My father in law’s philosophy on building is no different than what is written in scripture today.
Do it right so that it stands the test of time.
Each time we act on God’s word, we are adding a layer of concrete to our spiritual foundation.
During Advent, we fortify our spiritual structure. We strengthen our foundation because we take the time to sit and wait for the One to come. Whenever we wait in hope we affirm our belief that God keeps his promises. Whenever we wait in trust we allow the Holy Spirit to nourish the seed that God planted long ago. Whenever we wait in faith we begin to identify with what it must have been like for Mary or Elizabeth who relied on their faith alone during such an uncertain time.
It isn’t always easy, though. I read the news and I get sad and angry. I think about the future and I get a little nervous. I hear some people talk who claim we share the same faith and I am aghast at their lack of empathy.
So, it isn’t easy.
But my foundation is strong because I make a point of taking the time to strengthen it. I know that darkness exists because we are in it. But I also have the benefit of knowing who is the Light. I know that as we move through this season the promise has already been kept. So when the floods come or the winds blow I am not as susceptible to being knocked down.
At least not for good.
Here is an oldie but a goodie. A song I used to listen to with my kids.
