Do You Feel Lucky?
“Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see but did not see it, and hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” Luke 10:23-24
This is written differently than in Marks Gospel and I find that very telling. Mark was a Jew speaking to Jews, Luke was a Gentile converted to the message of Jesus Christ. Luke sees the message of Jesus as a universal message. Luke’s approach is a missionary approach, so when we read this passage we are probably suppose to reading that Jesus is telling them how lucky they are to be given insight into the kingdom of God as he prepares them for their own missions. Which makes me ask the question that Clint Eastwood made famous, “do you feel lucky today?”
I do feel lucky. I feel lucky because I know that no matter what happens in life, large or small, I am a cherished member of God’s family. I feel lucky because I can see through all of the shenanigans that go on in the world and know what really matters. I am thrilled that life has a deeper, broader meaning. What I get to hear is that God rules, I’m not in charge, we needn’t be afraid, there is something bigger outside of us.
I think this message is vital right now. The media is bombarding us with doomsday speak left and right, it really can mess up your chi. But if you can see what matters, if you can hear your purpose, it isn’t really that scary. If you give in to the panic and the negativity you will have a much more difficult time spreading the message. The passages that precedes this one are of Jesus giving praise to his Father…he is joyful! He feels so blessed! So do I.
Where is God in all of this? Everywhere. Let your eyes see and your ears hear!
Today, I thank God for the gift of his love and care. I thank God for all of the goodness he lets me see everyday. I ask God to help me keep my eyes and ears open to his work. I ask that he help me be a useful tool in bringing his love to others through the love of his Son.
