I have a confession to make. I am blowing Lent in so many ways. Sure, I can blame it on the liturgical year and on the chaotic schedule in my program at church, I am not getting much time to think , muchless reflect. But, I think there is more to it than those factors…I think it is Donald Trump ( #makedonalddrumpfagain). Let me be the first to blame Trump as everyone likes to blame Obama for what is happening in their personal lives. Turnabout is fair play.
There…I have officially gone political. But you know what, I am not sorry because I am at the point where my Christian conscience is telling me to not be silent or ambiguous about where I stand in the midst of the chaos. I stand dismayed, shocked and appalled.
Yesterday was Super Tuesday. Yesterday, we saw just how dangerous an arrested adolescent with a lot of money can be. We also saw how self-identified Christians really have no idea about the person that they are suppose to be following. What is the Anne LaMott line, “When God hates the same people that you do, it means you have made God in your own image.”
This man purports an anti-gospel approach to things. He plays on not just fear but greed as well. He is really no more than a middle school bully who made it “really good” because his father saw to it he would. Case in point is his Marco Rubio mockery. Behavior that if my 12 year old displayed, would land them in some serious hot water. But my 12 year old wouldn’t do that because she is too intelligent and dignified, something that eludes Mr. Trump. But people eat it up. All well and good if he is an entertainer but if he is running for President of the United States do people even understand that that is what he is doing??? I cannot figure it out.
But here is what disturbs me, he is winning self identified Christians. I know people who consider themselves followers of Christ, attend church faithfully and are voting for Trump.
That pretty much is me. How are people reconciling this? How are they telling themselves that that they can follow a man who personifies the Seven Deadly Sins ?(click the link if you need a brush up on them) How are they comfortable voting for a man who breaks the Ten Commandments with such ease? Someone who has such little concern for decency or dignity? How can people be comfortable when the rally cry is more about hate than love? I just don’t get it.
There are so many biblical passages that come to mind when I hear him talk. So many characters (I’ve been using Harod for my reference point) that come to mind. I know that God will win this in the end. I know that Love will prevail, I have total faith in God. But I am dumbfounded at the level of acceptance this man and his appalling behavior has among, specifically, Christians. We are so incredibly off course if people find him acceptable. We are blinded by the proverbial golden calf. I just don’t get it.
I will end there, just to let everyone know that I need to find a place of charity in my heart about all of this. I need to ask God to forgive me for wanting to muzzle him. Because, I know that all things work for God. I know that God is calling us out of complacency and exposing our societal sins. I know that the “Trump phenomenon” is holding up a mirror to us as a nation so that we can see what we have become.
Interestingly enough, he does not do as well with younger voters. Most of them love Bernie. But, we shouldn’t be surprised by this because we are told that the children will lead.
Here is a segment from John Oliver. As my nephew who posted it said, “if you are considering voting for Trump or have voted for him, you owe it to yourself to watch this.” I agree.
