New York State of Mind

I have been watching the news all last evening and today because as we understood it, Sandy the Superstorm was suppose to blow threw our area.  I am amazed that it has taken the turn it has and amazed at the devastation it has caused. I am happy that we seem to have been spared. But I am also amazed at the spirit of people in times like these.  First responders specifically.  Watching the devastation and the willingness of people to go into the thick of things to get someone else out of harms way is one of the most inspiring things to witness.  The idea of someone in this divided country risking their life to save another is long-standing and well-tested but when things get heated (as because of the election they are now) we seem to foget that our natural inclination is to unify and to help our neighbor. NYC has such an extraordinary spirit, I know it will bounce back in no time.  Buses start to run later today…free of charge.So as an aside, I happened upon this article, which is just a great bit of evidence about what people do in times like these.  The human contact that is so vital during times of high stress is achieved in 120 characters or less.  You don’t have to look too hard to find God in that.http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/meet-fdny-one-woman-twitter-response-team-guiding-141143449.htmlIn the meantime, where ever you are, please hold all those affected in your prayers because even though this is a lovely little aside to the bigger story, the fact remains that fifty to eighty homes burned down in Queens.  People are without power which can lead to all kinds of problems in a city that big, travelers are stranded, businesses are underwater, there are many who foolheartedly stayed and still need to be evacuated and the storm continues to batter not just the coast but the interior states. Much intent prayer is needed.
